How to turn visitors into members
By Caddyio · Updated
Your best membership prospects have already played your course, often several times, and nobody at the club knows their name. Converting them is less about advertising than about record-keeping: capture who visits, notice who comes back, and make the approach while the last round is still recent.
- Capture the visitor properly A name in a paper book is not a record. You need enough to contact them again, and their consent to do so — captured at check-in, when they are standing in front of you and have a reason to give it.
- Count repeat visits One visit is a day out. Three visits in a season is somebody who likes your course and is currently paying you green fees for the privilege. That list is your membership pipeline and most clubs have never looked at it.
- Approach while it is warm The conversation lands within a week or two of a round, not in the January mailshot. They still remember the greens being good.
- Do the arithmetic for them Show what their visits cost against membership. A visitor who has played four times has usually spent a meaningful fraction of a subscription without any of the benefits, and seeing that number is more persuasive than any brochure copy.
- Offer the intermediate step Full membership is a big jump. A flexible or points-based category, or a mid-season pro-rata, converts people who would say no to the full thing in March.
- Ask the ones who did not join A short question to visitors who declined tells you whether it is price, tee availability or the waiting list. Clubs guess at this constantly and are often wrong.
Frequently asked
- How do golf clubs find membership prospects?
- Usually they already have them: visitors who have played the course more than once. The problem is that most clubs do not record visitors well enough to notice who is coming back.
- When is the best time to approach a visitor about membership?
- Within a week or two of a round, while the experience is recent. An approach in the January mailshot is competing with everything else in the post and has nothing to attach itself to.
- What actually persuades a repeat visitor to join?
- Arithmetic more often than atmosphere. Showing what their green fees have already cost against a subscription is concrete, and a flexible or pro-rata category removes the size of the jump.
Caddyio records visitors at check-in with consent, shows repeat-visit and dormant-member patterns from rounds actually played, and lets you send a targeted message to that group across email, push and the club feed.
